Church History

We are inviting families and friends to join us in Service to celebrate the history of Riverside United Methodist Church (RUMC). Riverside United Methodist Church of Sacramento is one of the 800 United Methodist Churches in California.  RUMC began in 1877 in Sacramento, under the United Brethren in Christ Church. On September 16, 1951 the church was relocated to the current site on the corner of Vallejo and Muir. As Asian refugees started to immigrate to the surrounding neighborhood in the 1970s and 1980s, Rev. Calvin Wong (Pastor of Chinese United Methodist Church) saw this as an opportunity to minister to Chinese new immigrants. In 1977 Rev. Calvin Wong transferred membership to RUMC furthering the mission to target immigrants. In the 2010s, the church building space was renovated, under Rev. Ernest Kan, which has led to opportunities in allowing non-profits to use the renovated space. God is working through Riverside United Methodist Church in many ways. Pastor Jason Ong recently retired from leading the Chinese Worship service. Pastor Henry Pablo III, previously a Masters student on the UMC Ordained Elder track, lead the English Worship service. He now serves in the Central Valley. In July 2021, we welcomed Reverend  Felicisimo Cao to lead both the English and Chinese Worship services and connect with the surrounding community.

Motto

“Christ Above All." Which is centered on John 12:32 - Jesus said, “And I, when I am lifted up from the earth, will draw all people to myself.”
